What Are The Safety Mistakes Made by Experienced Boaters?

Failing to wear a lifejacket or personal floatation device.

Before heading out on the water, ensure each person on board has the right life jacket or personal floatation device. Please make sure they are in good working condition before leaving the dock. Wear your lifejacket or personal floatation device (PFD) while you are underway.

Missing required safety gear.

Mandatory safety gear requirements for a pleasure craft differ depending on the length and type of watercraft. Check Transport Canada’s Safe Boating Guide (https://tc.canada.ca/sites/default/files/migrated/tp_511e.pdf) for required safety items.

Being under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

Boat sober or have a designated driver; don’t operate any vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The consequences could be fatal.

Failing to keep a lookout.

Designate lookouts on your boat. Don’t boat alone if possible. Watch for other boats, people, obstructions in the water, and ocean-going vessels.

Failing to be #WakeAware.
