The Port of Orillia Pirate Party will return September 4–6, 2026, transforming Orillia’s waterfront, Couchiching Park, and downtown core into one of the most unique and immersive festivals in Canada.

What began in 2018 as a creative idea on a shoestring budget has grown into what is arguably Canada’s largest pirate-themed festival, drawing boaters, families, reenactors, and visitors from across the country.

The origins of the Pirate Party are rooted in collaboration and imagination. In 2018, Allan Lafontaine, Harbour Master and Executive Director of the Orillia & District Chamber of Commerce, which operates the Port of Orillia, made the acquaintance of Thomas Hurbut of Simcoe Squadron, a local historical reenactor group. That connection proved transformative. Hurbut and his extensive contacts within the reenactment community helped elevate the Pirate Party to an entirely new level and without him, this event would not be possible.

Today, the festival features a full-sized pirate village with dramatic land battles in Couchiching Park, complete with cannons and muskets, alongside theatrical “sea battles” on Lake Couchiching. These battles pit The Lord Mayor’s Men against The Pirate King and his forces, supplied by the legendary Admiral Nash the Slash, creating an unforgettable spectacle for spectators of all ages.

The Pirate Party’s popularity grew quickly. By 2019, every slip at the Port of Orillia was sold out, confirming the event’s appeal among the boating community. That same year marked a major milestone when MD Marine, the festival’s key sponsor, provided the financial support needed to raise the bar—enhancing programming, infrastructure, and overall production quality.

Community engagement has always been central to the event’s success. Each year, pirates “take over” the Port of Orillia on Saturday, and the public has enthusiastically embraced the tradition of making local politicians and business leaders walk the plank. Plank walkers collect pledges, with funds raised by the Rotary Club of Orillia in support of the Rotary Aqua Theatre, blending entertainment with meaningful community fundraising.

Port of OrilliaMusic is another defining element of the Pirate Party. Live bands perform nightly throughout the weekend, culminating in a beloved Sunday night tradition featuring Orangeman, helping to create an atmosphere that keeps visitors celebrating long after sunset.

By 2023, the excitement had expanded well beyond the waterfront. Downtown Orillia merchants embraced the momentum, closing streets and turning the Pirate Party into a true city-wide celebration. The result was increased foot traffic, stronger sales, and a shared sense of pride across the community.

In 2024, the festival received a significant boost with funding from Experience Ontario, enabling continued growth, enhanced visitor experiences, and broader tourism impact. The grant recognized the Pirate Party as a major contributor to Orillia’s cultural and economic vitality.

Port OrilliaLooking ahead, the next phase of the Pirate Party’s evolution is ambitious. Organizers aim to attract more reenactors from across North America, expand the pirate village, and welcome additional vendors offering period-appropriate crafts, costumes, Renaissance items, and Caribbean cultural goods. Pirates have already sailed in from across Canada, reinforcing the event’s national reputation.

At its heart, the Port of Orillia Pirate Party remains family-oriented, drawing inspiration from the fun and adventure of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. It’s an inclusive, imaginative celebration that welcomes all ages—and all who dare to dress the part.

And if the tourism boards of Jamaica or the Bahamas ever wish to get involved with a Pirate Getaway Package, organizers are more than happy to listen.

From its humble beginnings to sold-out slips, closed downtown streets, provincial recognition, and national attention, the Port of Orillia Pirate Party stands as a powerful example of what community-driven creativity can achieve.

As the countdown begins for September 4–6, 2026, one thing is certain: Orillia is ready once again to fly the black flag and invite the world to join the adventure.
