Boat Test #1736

By: Captain Christopher Kourtakis

This 40-footer is on a mission and can do just about everything with the combination of the upper and lower deck designs. Jeanneau was cunning in their layouts to provide comforts for overnights and functionality for daytime boating. This boat has so much to offer everyone on board.

Once on, you can’t but help notice that the aft cockpit is loaded with tons of features like the L-shaped lounge with an aft seatback that folds to form a comfy sun pad. One feature that separates this boat from others is the port side drop down terrace. With the flip of a switch, you can increase the entertaining space. An optional remote-controlled SureShade sun-awning can be added for full protection from the sun. The hardtop has a drop-down hidden TV which adds to the ambiance of the area.

2022 Jeanneau Leader 12.5The entertainment island backs up to the helm seating and has a full cockpit galley with room for outdoor food prep. The island includes an electric grill, two sinks (optional or livewell), a 13-gallon fridge, and loads of storage for kitchenware. I would opt for a second fridge or an ice maker to complete the full functionality of the island.

The forward cockpit area has a sun pad that is more of a lounger with three large and separate seating cushions. This is easily accessed with the port side walkway to the bow. The large stainless-steel railing is high and large to add safety and stability. Options like a portable table and filler cushion reimagine the forward cockpit as a private sun pad and are a must have.

The lower cabin area is plush and laid out very well. Forward there is salon seating that transforms into a king-size bed. The midship master cabin also has a filler cushion to create a full-sized king bed from the full bed on one side and the twin on the other. The head on the starboard side has a shower and toilet combo that is separate from the sink and cabinet storage. There is plenty of natural light throughout the cabin from the large windows on either side of the area.

Powered by Triple Yamaha V6 four-stroke outboards (300 HP each), it has a range of cruising speeds from 48 kmph to 56 kmph, and can reach a top-speed of 80 mph. The Leader 12.5 is as impressive as much as she is functional. This is the perfect day boat / overnighter for the Great lakes, Georgian Bay or the surrounding bodies of water.
