Aluminum powerhouses, jet-propelled thrills, and more from the Montréal Boat Show…

By Patrick Campeau

Spring and summer are just around the corner and the waters’ surfaces will soon give us access to some incredible fishing hotspots. We will then be able to sail off on great adventures featuring big predators just waiting for our lures.

At the recent Montreal Boat Show which was held at the Palais de Congres in late February, I met with a number of manufacturers and representatives who presented their hulls and the various features that set them apart. Here’s what they had to say:

Chaloupe Commère Verchère 16Chaloupe Commère

For Pierre Lefrançois of Marina Bo-Bi-No in Laval, the Commère company makes one of the toughest rowboats on the market. A.D. Métal Artisanal Inc., a family business established nearly 35 years ago, specializes in general welding and the manufacturing of metal products. In 2021, this firm based on the street des Entrepreneurs in Quebec City extended its expertise to the construction of aluminum rowboats.  These are renowned for their exceptional strength, performance and durability. Offered in a dozen configurations, Mr. Lefrançois presented the Verchère 16 model, priced from $5575. This lightweight boat offers excellent value for the money. Made from 0.125 in. (1/8 in.) aluminum, it is easy to repair by a welder in the event of damage. With no spacers to solidify riveted boats, it’s easy to clean. Hull welds are guaranteed for life. Interior or exterior paint is available as an option. For more information, visit https://chaloupecommere.ca/

Highfield Velox 420 on trailerHighfield JetBoat

Service manager Stéphanie Dubois from Desjardins Sport in St-Jérôme introduced me to the brand-new Highfield Velox 420. In her words, this jet boat redefines adventure on the water. Powered by BRP’s Rotax 90 HP engine, this compact yet powerful boat is designed for those who want to roam and explore the waves without restriction. With over 54,000 boats delivered worldwide since the brand’s inception in 2011, Highfield Boats is a leader in the RIB sector.

“From its corrosion-resistant hull to its intuitive controls, this jet boat is built to last and perform. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a passionate fisherman, you’ll love it”, says Dubois. It’s the perfect combination of the durability and lightness of an aluminum hull with the cutting-edge performance of a jet propulsion system. Technically speaking, this model can be configured as you wish, with an overall length of 4.44 m, an internal length of 2.79 m and an overall width of 2.07 m. The tube diameter is 47 cm and there are four air chambers. Weighing 481 kg, it can accommodate eight people or a total load of 550 kg. Its 55-litre fuel tank gives you appreciable autonomy. Fishing on a Princecraft Xpédition 200 WSPrincecraft

For Dominik Grégoire, president of Desjardins Sport in St-Jérôme, one of the most beautiful boats for fishing enthusiasts is without doubt the Xpédition 200 WS. In fact, he equips two members of his promotional team with this 6.1 m, 664 kg upside-down hull which can accommodate five passengers and a powerful 250 HP Mercury Pro XS engine on its transom. The instrument panel features all the essential information on tachometer, voltmeter, speedometer, trim and fuel level. Made from 5052-H36 marine aluminum alloy, the bottom is lined from bow to midship, as well as at the chine. Elevated fishing platforms in the front and at the back facilitate a variety of techniques and approaches. Passenger-side fishing rod holders, tie-downs and nine-foot storage with tubes secure your poles. A bow plate for an electric motor with plug and socket lets you add a front-mounted model. Several spaces and nets are ideal for storing anything that needs to be kept out of harm’s way. ProFlo Plus bow and stern livewells will keep your fish alive after they’ve been caught.

“We’re proud to present a boat of this quality and performance made right here in Quebec”, says Mr. Grégoire. For more information, visit www.princecraft.com.
