Even before last years first Rendez-vous - the poker run for everyone - was over in Gananoque, Ontario, the feedback was rolling in. Participants were already asking 'When’s the next one?' They were already saying "Tell us where and when, and we'll be there!"
The feedback continued all last fall with boat dealers and engine manufacturers joining in on the excitement and wanting to become involved. We received email after email all winter long asking about this coming summer's events. And finally at the Toronto International Boat Show the overwhelming question and topic of discussion at our booth was about the Rendez-vous. "When are they?" "Can I register my boat now?" "We had so much fun last summer....." and they'd go on to tell us their story.
To all of you who've written in, called in, caught us in person.....we want to say "thank you" and the very best way we can do that is to give you more...more...more of what you've asked for.
So for the summer of 2011 we've put together two events that we can tell you about now (there's more in the works so stay tuned to our website and future issues for updates!).
What's a Rendez-vous? A Rendez-vous is a family friendly boating event on the water for boats of all sizes and speeds. Participants register their boat - everything from PWC's to pontoon boats, to aluminum fishing boats and homemade sea flees, to deck boats to cruisers and even an over forty foot yacht got entered last year! Everyone is given a number and the first of their five playing cards at registration. The next morning, there's a safety meeting for all drivers where we lay out the course we'll be cruising for the day including any hazards, slow speed zones and the all important lunch stop! Then the boats take to the water behind the official pace boat for the Rendez-vous event, stopping at predetermined locations and picking up their next four cards to make a poker hand. Back at the event that evening, the hands are revealed and prizes awarded by our famous MC for the best hand, best boat, best dressed crew, and much more.
When are they? The first Rendez-vous of 2011 will happen in Ottawa Rockland on the July 1st long weekend. Come bring your boat and join in the festivities: inflatable games for the kids, local talent shows, evening bands and concerts, and of course fireworks! The event will occur on the historic Ottawa River in the shadow of Canada,s parliament buildings, the ever-popular Bytown flea market and the largest Canada Day celebration in our nation.
For the second event we head up to the beautiful Kawartha Lakes region of cottage country on July 15th and 16th. For the third event, we will return to where Poker Runs started some 25 years ago: Gananoque, Ontario. On July 22nd and 23rd we'll converge on the waterfront and cruise around the St. Lawrence river's in the well protected waters amongst the many limestone islands. The scenery is spectacular and it's a great spot to get that photo of you and your boat that you can blow up and frame! Just cruise on up to the pace boat and we'll snap a few for you to choose from later at the registration tent. Then we close out this summer's events with our forth Rendez-vous in Orillia August 5th to 6th.
Don't miss the Boat Show and Sale Many local dealers will be joining us at both events, to showcase their newest boats and engines at great prices, so even if you don't have a boat, or are looking for a new one, come on out and have a look. There's something for everyone from boats to accessories, and even new tubes for the kids entertainment!
9.9hp Charity Auction Do you have a 9.9hp on your boat? Come and challenge other boaters to a timed shootout on Sunday morning. Boats race in dead heats against each other in an elimination format to find the ultimate winner! At the end, the new 9.9 engines donated by the engine manufacturers are auctioned off with all the proceeds going to charity.
How do I register? Registration is now closed for this 2011 season. Stay tuned for our plans for the summer of 2012.
