Bayliner Discovery 215
By Steve Fennell

A spacious, versatile runabout dressed to thrill.

Bayliner Discovery 215Knowing that family runabouts require optimum space for the many pleasures of boating, Bayliner revealed the new Discovery series for 2007. Among the seven entries in this stable of runabouts and cabin cruisers is the 215, a stylish, user-friendly bowrider that’s certainly no slouch when it comes to accommodating several guests and the needs of avid boating enthusiasts.

And even though it comes in at an LOA of a little more than just 20 feet, this Discovery will certainly please with its two aft seats, set of sleeper seats at the helm and companion console plus additional seating space with backrests in the bow. In all, the 215’s layout is not only accommodating, but it can easily handle extra passengers when the duty calls.

Another element of optimum functionality is its riding and running characteristics thanks to its Smooth Ride System (SRS) hull, designed to deliver improved handling, optimum fuel economy and with its beam of a little more than eight feet, first-rate stability. Combine its 18 degrees of deadrise with the standard 220 hp 5.0 L MerCruiser power plant and 37-gallon fuel tank and users are set for a day on the water.

The cockpit and appointments will also impress. Staying competitive, the Discovery sports a large in-floor/wakeboard locker, countless beverage holders, plus a waterproof AM/FM stereo that’s Sat-ready and features inputs for an iPod, an mp3 and CD player. Additional storage is found in padded side panels and storage shelving below the helm and passenger console. Beverage holders, along with grab handles, are strategically placed by all seat locations.

Drivers of the 215 will even enjoy the comfort. There’s a padded wheel with rack-and-pinion steering, tilt steering, a compass, and a series of all the necessary gauges. Adding an extra touch of style are the titanium accents on the dash switch panels. Protecting the driver, port passenger and other on board guests in the cockpit from wind and water spray is a large safety glass wraparound windshield, complete with an opening section for smooth, easy access to the bow.

In the hardware department, tying off lines is simplified with ideally placed stainless cleats, and transom and bow eyes. There’s even a stainless ski tow ring for water sports. Easy access is provided in and out of the water with a standard swim step featuring stainless handrails and a retractable ladder.

While the 215 rounds-out with a single-axle painted trailer featuring brakes, a tongue jack, and swing-away tongue, perhaps dress the 215 to the nines with the many available appointments including a helm bucket seat, cockpit table, fishfinder, transom platform or even the offered fish package that includes a fishfinder, rod holders, and rod storage racks.
