| Cruise,
anchor or simply relax at the dock, this 2007 entry
is a real crowd pleaser at the slip or underway.
The
“dock queen” or "floating cottage"
is often referred to the many large yachts that sit
in marinas and are rarely, if ever, used beyond the
gas dock or pump out. The 2007 395 Motor Yacht from
Cruisers Yachts boasts all the desired features to
be associated with these terms, but what separates
it from the pack is its series of standard, upscale
amenities, plus the fact that it can move in all the
right places at idle and hit impressive speeds on
a dime.
EXTERIOR
The 395 has a sturdy, sleek profile that highlights
a large window forward, with three geometric windows
(and three portholes) on each side. But, in addition
to its striking, good looks, the exterior offers many
safety elements. When handling lines or accessing
the bow, there's a large, sturdy and heavy-gauge stainless
steel bow rail, plus wide side decks complemented
with stainless steel grab rails. Boarding is also
made easy. From high docks, simply enter through the
port or starboard gates, then through the Lexan wing
doors, which lead to the aft deck. When boarding from
a low dock, simply step onto the swim platform and
walk up a curved staircase. While at anchor or the
dock, the platform is great for swimmers thanks to
its a stainless steel boarding ladder.
AFT DECK
In traditional Cruisers style, the aft deck is spacious
and well-appointed with a comfortable lounge, a large
cabinet featuring a refrigerator/freezer with bottle
racks, a wet bar (also with drink holders) and stereo
with CD player. Added appointments include plush carpeting
and a cockpit shower. And since there are only three
steps leading up to the helm area, where there's a
companion lounge and double helm seat, conversations
among large groups can easily be enjoyed no matter
where you're sitting.
To starboard, you immediately realize Cruisers designers
had serious boaters in mind when they designed the
helm. The gauges are paired, which is a very nice
touch, and also means you can compare port and starboard
oil pressure, temperature, etc. quick and easy. There’s
ample space to add personal electronics, and some
added touches include a compass, depth finder, hour
meter, and spotlight remote control. In all, this
entire area is spacious and comfortable.
SALON
In the main salon, Cruisers offers a choice of floorplans.
Choose between a dinette with facing benches on either
side of the solid cherry table (that converts to a
large berth) or a semicircular settee and crescent
shaped dining table, which provides more room in the
salon. To port, you can choose a double incliner settee
or a sofa sleeper. A 20-inch LCD TV comes standard
and to really spruce up the entertainment, check out
the available 26-inch unit. Either way, the Dolby
Digital Theatre system and five-disc CD changer will
fill the room with crisp, clean sound.
The galley is chef's delight. No matter how many guests
you're planning for dinner, the fibreglass counters,
complete with solid inlays, offer plenty of space
to prep. Some other appointments include a refrigerator/freezer,
two-burner electric stove, and a microwave. The hardwood
sole and abundance of storage space are added niceties.
STATEROOMS
The forward stateroom has a double bunk to port and
a single bed to starboard. So, a couple with a child,
or two single adults, can sleep in this room without
sharing the bed. Another thoughtful design is the
separate entrance to the day head.
The
master stateroom is even more impressive. It offers
a queen berth, private head, and clothes lockers.
There's plenty of space and the paired ports on either
side, and very large hatch overhead, bring in natural
light. The private master head is appointed with a
separate shower and you can even add a washer/dryer
unit. An LCD TV with DVD player is available.
The salon also offers access to the engine compartment
through a hatch in the sole. Light switches are conveniently
located on the underside of the hatch so you can find
them quickly and easily, and there's ample room to
easily access all the service points.
PERFORMANCE
When I fired up the twin 420 hp fresh-water cooled
Volvo Penta 8.1 L gas engines, the first thing I noticed
was how quiet they are and how effective the sound
insulation is.
Around the dock at idle, the 395 is on the fast side
– four mph – yet it responds very well.
The day we tested the 395 from Angus Yachts of Toronto
in Port Credit, Ontario, there was a strong west wind
blowing her off the finger dock and toward the adjacent
boat, so her quick and sure response came in handy.
Out on open water, the 395 cruises off plane at a
little more than 10 mph at 2,200 rpm and we hit plane
at 18 mph at 3,500 rpm. If you want to get somewhere
in a hurry, she’ll do 32 mph at 4,900 rpm at
wide-open throttle. On this gusty day, she was stable
and sure-footed in turns, and eased into her own wake
very comfortably.
While heading back to the dock, the 395 moved smoothly
into the slip and the neighbouring boater barely had
to look up from his newspaper.
The Cruisers Yachts' 395 Motor Yacht is a very well
appointed watercraft. She can sleep several adults,
depending on the configuration, and is the ideal vessel
for a couple of couples who want to enjoy extended
cruises.
