Here’s
a light weight, versatile rig that’s perfect for
Canadian lakes.
Starcraft
boats have been a favourite of Canadian anglers for
decades, and while the boats have changed over the years,
what has remained constant is the company’s unique
blend of no-nonsense construction with cutting-edge
features. No wonder Starcrafts have remained a fixture
at fishing camps, local derbies and national tournaments
across Canada.
Although the Starfish 166 is one of the newest models
in the Starcraft fleet, its overall design reflects
Starcraft’s heritage as a leader in aluminum fishing
boat design. An ideal multi-species fishing platform,
the Starfish series (which includes a larger 176 model)
is built on a rugged Power-Trac hull that takes rough
water in stride while still delivering great stability
at low speeds or in calm conditions. The interior layout
features an oversized front casting deck with substantial
below-floor storage, a bow panel with a standard Minn
Kota 65 electric motor, and a large in-floor rod locker
with integral protector tubes running up the center
of the casting deck. The bow deck also houses a large
22-gallon livewell (you’ll find an additional
21 gallon well with integrated bait bucket in the stern).
The Starfish is available in both single or dual console
layouts – single console versions feature a large
smoked windshield, while dual versions offer a full
walk-thru windshield for additional comfort in cool
weather. The optional full canvas enclosure is a worthwhile
investment if you like to fish early or late in the
season.
The helm for either version is well laid out and thoughtfully
composed, with a cup holder, in-dash CD stereo, and
ample space for electronics. In fact, a Lowrance LCD
depth finder comes standard. Domed gauges provide clear
visibility in even drizzly conditions, while a tilt
wheel and no-feedback steering make maneuvering in tight
quarters a snap.
The three pedestal seats are comfortable and feature
no-pinch hinges to protect rod tips and stray fingers.
The cockpit flooring is maintenance-free vinyl, which
provides excellent grip and easy cleanups. You’ll
find an additional seven-foot rod locker running along
the port gunnel. The stern has been left open and uncluttered
– with the Starfish’s beefy gunnels, it’s
perfect for trolling, with or without downriggers.
Starcraft’s Starfish 166 is a well designed, versatile
fishing boat that’s ideal for everything from
bass to lake trout. And, it’s light enough you
can tow it behind the family minivan or launch it just
about anywhere. Starcraft has made a clear statement
with the all-new Starfish – these guys are serious
about building really good boats.
