A
popular cruiser re-tooled for added pleasure on the
water.
Formula/Thunderbird
Products’ Super Sport series always stays exciting.
Consisting of two models, the 370 SS and its larger
sistership, the 400 SS, this line has always appealed
to cruisers looking for performance and comfort in one
complete package.
For 2006, Formula has made the 400 SS even more comfortable
with the addition of a new optional hard top. Created
to provide additional comfort and functionality, the
hard top is aesthetically pleasing and blends neatly
with the 400’s smooth, rounded profile.
Tooled and handcrafted at the company’s head quarters
in Decatur, Indiana, the hard top is joined at the same
location of the former radar arch, while additional
support is provided by a pair of polished stainless
steel struts located just in front of the windshield,
without sacrificing valuable dash space. These supports
also double as grab rails when the weather gets rough.
The hard top offers an ample amount of headroom and
covers approximately three-quarters of the cockpit,
stretching from just before the windshield to the rear
U-shaped bench. For added convenience, the top houses
a set of flush-mounted interior lights featuring frosted
lenses along with a pair of Bomar hatches, which open
for additional ventilation while at anchor or the dock.
Some other standards include two stainless steel grab
rails located to port and starboard on the exterior
of the hard top’s arch, three stainless flag holders,
a halogen search light plus an optional Raymarine radar
that’s compatible with the company’s C or
E Series chartplotting systems. Another option worth
considering is the 17-inch wireless TV/DVD player that
mounts on the inside of the starboard arch.
While this new hard top is impressive, recreational
boaters will undoubtedly enjoy the many other amenities
found on the 400. In addition to a large extended swim
platform, stereo remote, transom trunk, hot and cold
shower featured aft, the cockpit highlights an expansive
seating layout, an entertainment centre, plus a fully-loaded
helm station.
Below decks is also impressive with a luxurious galley,
comfortable stateroom, aft cabin and an elegant salon.
With too many other impressive features to list, the
400 rounds out with a long list of power choices from
MerCruiser and gas/diesel options from Volvo Penta.
A new engine for the 400 this year is Mercury Racing’s
new 600 SCi with the heavy-duty Bravo I XR drives offering
600 hp per side. This twin power package is the ideal
choice to add a little more performance to your comfort
this season.
