Prepare
For A Great Season (20-3)
by William E. Taylor

Just
as we were going to the presses with this issue, temperatures
across the country were providing the perfect boating
weather to kick-start the new season. I can’t
speak for everyone, but if you’re an avid boater
like I am, you’re undoubtedly feeling the boating
spirit and that craving to head out on the water with
family and friends.
As we enter into another boating season, I must say
this year has been nothing but exciting. Of particular
interest is the recent news about Bombardier Recreational
Products (BRP) receiving the coveted U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award
for its impressive E-TEC outboard engine technology.
Power Boating Canada even made the trip to Washington
D.C. to witness key BRP officials accept the award for
E-TEC’s ultra- low emissions and low carbon monoxide
emissions. I can still remember when the first E-TEC
outboard rolled off the line at its manufacturing facility
in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and there was nothing but
anticipation throughout the industry after the Canadian-based
company introduced marine technology never seen before.
This is excellent news and I am looking forward to seeing
further developments they are working on.
After more than 20 years of power boating in Canada,
I am happy to report our mandate to promote and support
safe boating is stronger than ever. Whether you’re
planning an extensive trip, an afternoon cruise or you’re
a weekend cottage boater, take the time to ensure you
have all the required onboard safety gear, follow the
rules of the road and respect the waterways and other
boaters. Canada’s lakes and rivers are there to
share and the utmost safety is imperative for everyone’s
enjoyment.
In fact, this issue includes insightful features to
remind you of some of the important safety factors.
Starting on page 10, Dusty Miller discusses the importance
of onboard communication with other crewmembers when
docking, mooring or even line handling in Handle With
Care. If you do a lot of boating with family or friends,
this is one column not to miss. Mark King lends some
informative insight on boating safety and regulations
to follow this season in Lifeline. If that’s not
enough, Richard Crowder lists his top ten safety guidelines
whether you’re en route to a new cruising destination,
wakeboarding with the kids, or anchoring with your family.
This issue also features a hot gear section, exciting
boat tests plus a report on Yamaha’s new F250
four-stroke, after testing this powerhouse on the mighty
waters of the Atlantic during the Miami International
Boat Show. We’re sure you’ll be impressed
with the results.
Power Boating Canada is devoted the Canadian boating
lifestyle. We are your number one source of boat tests,
the latest gear and breaking news 12 months of the year.
While I have received several inquiries from readers
so far in 2005, keep the e-mails coming in, I would
love to hear from you. You can reach me at bill@powerboating.com.
