Rinker R1      by Steve Fennell
Rinker has what it takes to deliver unlimited fun with their new wakeboard contender.
Rinker R1When it comes to wakeboard boats no expense is spared for excitement. Heavy-duty wakeboard racks, expansive seating layouts and super crisp-sounding stereo systems are all part of the lifestyle. They’re fast, comfortable and of course, totally cool.

For 2005, Rinker Boats, the builder of an extensive line of cruisers, sportboats and runabouts, offers the R1, a wakeboard version of its popular 212 Captiva. Rinker has taken a giant leap forward in this market segment by combining an impressive platform and all the essentials with the power to thrill.

The 212 Captiva boasts the same LOA and beam of the 212, but is transformed into the R1 by opting for what Rinker calls the Extreme Water Sports Package.

This contender has smooth lines and the custom folding waketower further complements its sleek profile. This waketower comes loaded with board racks plus a pair of coaxial speakers driven by the Sony power amp and six-disc CD changer. There’s also a transom stereo remote and two more coaxial speakers in the cockpit.

Access to the cockpit is via the extended swim platform and a transom walk-through, which flanks a large sun pad. There’s room for family and friends thanks to the large aft bench and two forward swivel buckets. Some other appointments include an integrated trash container, snap-in carpeting, and stowable snack table to enhance entertaining.

When it comes time to ride, monster wakes are provided by the Fat Sac ballast system, which offers more than enough weight at the stern for high-flying excitement. There’s no chance of drivers missing out on the action either thanks to the rear-view mirror at the helm.
Two panels are located at the dash. The top panel features a series of gauges, while the one below hosts the rocker switches. The surrounding windshield offers a walk-through to the bow where you’ll find more seating with storage underneath plus an anchor locker.

In power department, the R1 is ready to ride. Several MerCruiser and Volvo Penta power choices are available. If you’re looking for the ultimate in performance, opt for the Volvo Penta 5.7 L Gxi with SX drive offering 280 horses. This will offer more than enough crank to pull boarders, skiers or even a couple of tubers.

The R1 should prove to be a hot model this year. The kids will love the stereo and the power, while adults will appreciate its versatility and ample cockpit space.
