Larson 268 LXi      by Steve Fennell
Several new appointments rank this hefty runabout over the top.

Larson 268 LXiFor 2005, Larson re-tooled its series of LXi runabouts with four new models, each lending fresh hull and deck lines, rich colors, and an impressive array of innovative features. A big surprise in this collection is the 268 - a 26-footer that is destined to break new ground in the ever-popular class of larger, heftier runabouts.

The 268’s stylish profile exhibits a hull with smooth lines, sharper, creased edges and an all-new integrated boarding platform that comes to a point at its center-line. While this modification forced the platform out over the drive unit, it created shorter, steeper outside corners for easier storage on trailers, in boathouses or a garage. More convenience is offered by the four-step stainless steel boarding ladder, fresh-water shower and wet-gear storage locker.

Easy access to the cockpit continues with the starboard walk-through located below a flip-up panel on the large padded sun deck. A key benefit in the cockpit is the expansive seating layout with more than enough space to host a small family reunion. An L-shaped lounge flows from the port corner, along the aft pad to half way up the starboard side, just behind the swivel companion custom bucket seat. It faces a fiberglass entertainment console with designated stowage for a 25-quart portable cooler, sink and wastebasket concealed under a lift-up cutting board. To port is the custom bucket helm seat offering wood-grain dash panels with a full set of gauges, Lowrance digital depth finder and toggle switches.

Running between the two consoles is a walkway to the bow. Interestingly, Larson created the bow slightly deeper than the cockpit, providing added security for passengers when the waves pick up. The seating showcases all-new Comfort Fit cushions for added support and a centre filler cushion can create a second sun pad. Storage is found below the seats and a standard portable head is featured in the port compartment.

Larson powers the LXi with choice of engines including a 270 hp Volvo Penta 5.0 L GXi DP or a 420 hp 8.1 L GXi DP. A MerCruiser package is also available, ranging from 260 to 375 horses.

Rounding out the 268 are other standards such as a portable air compressor, Clarion stereo with Sirius satellite service, plus a custom EZ Loader trailer.
