Finding The Right Spark (19-4)
Steve Horsfall Afriend and I were discussing spring tune-ups and he was wondering what the difference is between marine-grade spark plugs and the automotive type? He was also wondering if it would hurt to run an engine with automotive plugs?

NO QUICK START
I have a 1997 60 hp Johnson equipped with what is called Quickstart electronic starting. According to the factory service manual, the unit will "automatically advance ignition timing when engine temperature is less than 105 degrees F and for approximately 10 seconds each time the engine is started independent of temperature."

When I run the engine for a while, then slow down to trolling speed, the engine revs up to 500 rpm and stays there! I have gone through the manual diagnostics as far as I can go without having the factory breakout box. I have even tested the temperature switch (that I boiled in oil), and it's fine. While the switch works by going to ground when the engine warms up, I cut and ran that switch wire to ground. Now, I no longer have increased idle speed when starting cold.

I have approached mechanics with this concern and they simply suggest the thermostat may be sticking and overcooling the engine at idle. All throttle and shift linkages are set according to the manual (the throttle is going right down to the stop). I am a licensed mechanic of 30 years and don't like to throw parts in any machine without being sure of a diagnosis. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

OVER THE TOP
I have a 1987 Evinrude V-4 120 hp outboard engine and I am looking into having the cowling refinished. Any ideas where I could get this done?
