1000
ISLANDS POKER RUN MOVES TO KINGSTON! (19-1)
|
Back
in the early 1980s, when we developed the poker run
concept, we had no idea that these fun-filled summer
weekends would grow to such massive proportions - especially
at our flagship event. Each year our 1000 Islands Poker
Run, the world's biggest international poker run, takes
place in a world-famous vacation playground that spans
two countries and attracts thousands of spectators along
the shoreline, or on the water, watching the action
from fishing boats or lounging on the sun deck of an
anchored cruiser.
This year, the 1000 Islands Poker Run moves to Kingston,
Ontario, marking a return to the city that hosted the
first-ever 1000 Islands Poker Run. (In the earlier years,
our headquarters included Kingston, Brockville and,
for the past several years, Gananoque).
This year, the 1000 Islands Poker Run is guaranteed
to be bigger and better than ever before. First off,
we've moved the event dates to the middle of August
(13-15). This is the busiest time of the tourist season
for the 1000 Islands region, so be sure to book your
hotel/motel rooms as early as possible!
Our route will take us from Kingston to Alexandria Bay
(NY), Rockport and a couple of other spots we're still
negotiating with. We'll keep you posted as soon as details
are finalized.
But the highlight of the event will be a special two-hour
lunch stop in Brockville. Not only will poker run fans
be able to check out the exotic Lamborghinis at the
docks, there'll be a special showcase of local and regional
arts and crafts - another way in which Power Boating
Canada poker runs help boost tourism economy throughout
the area.
There's lots happening in Canada's marine industry,
too, starting with the late-breaking news that, as of
December 12, 2003, the Governor General in Council,
on the recommendation of the Prime Minister has "transferred
from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to the Department
of Transport the control and supervision of those portions
of the Directorate-General of Marine Programs that are
responsible for policy related to pleasure craft safety,
marine navigation services, pollution prevention and
response, and navigable waters." We'll keep you
informed as further developments begin to shake out.
Meanwhile, while you're dropping by the Power Boating
Canada displays at major boat shows across the country,
be sure you stop by and catch up on the latest news
at the 2004 Discover Boating exhibit. Discover Boating
is a major industry wide effort to promote one of the
country's favourite family pastimes on the water. It
also includes the Mobility Cup program which is oriented
to physically challenged young people.
See you at the shows!
