Sea-Doo Speedster 200 by Steve Fennell

For the 2004 model year, Sea-Doo has taken a giant leap in performance with its all-new Speedster 200.

After testing this newcomer at the annual Sea-Doo dealer test ride event in Ontario's beautiful Muskoka Lakes Region, I was convinced the company will once again capture the attention of boaters looking for that extra edge of excitement.

Sea-Doo Speedster 200After a long tour of Lake Joe and other select lakes in the region, I was given a turn at the helm. Powered by twin Rotax 4-TEC jet drives, offering 155 horses per side, and with two people on board plus a half-tank of fuel, we slowly made our way out to the open water. The hull of the 200 we tested that day was Mazalan Blue, the first model of its kind in Canada. The 200 is also available in Viper Red.

While at slow speeds, tracking was responsive and she moved at every command of the wheel without delay. At the punch the throttles, the 200's acceleration was quick and the torque was solid and razor-sharp. Heading into a strong wind with light-medium chop, we hit an impressive top end speed of 58 mph. While I did push to break 60, the wind wasn't so forgiving and I eased back on the throttles. I would expect the 200 to hit 60 on a calmer day. Despite the stiff breeze on the day of our test ride, the Speedster's drive was smooth and comfortable.

The helm was neatly laid-out and all the gauges were clear and easy to read at a quick glance. Some added features here include a windscreen with pop-up wind deflector and a large storage compartment in the console. The passenger console features the same style but is fitted with a glove box concealing with AM/FM/CD stereo. Located in between is a large in-floor ski storage compartment. Just ahead is the bow offering more seating with a pair of grab handles and a large storage bin.

At the stern is an aft bench and directly behind is a cushioned sunpad. Ample storage and access to the engines. An added feature that will raise a question are the bars located on outside of the cockpit. These are multi-function aluminum rails that can attach a bimini or the wakeboard tower. The rails are solid, sturdy and can also be used as a handle to hang onto in rough weather.

Sea-Doo will do well with the 200 Speedster. It's quick, comfortable and offers all the amenities for excitement.
