Better To Replace Than Be Sorry (18-6)
Steve Horsfall I have a manifold concern. My boat is powered by a 1974 MerCruiser 165 hp with an Alpha One drive. My manifold is leaking. I've had it welded and it still leaks. The replacement cost is around $1,300. This is really not a considerable option for me. I have thought about removing the marine mani-fold and replacing it with a standard 250 hp Chevrolet automotive intake and exhaust. Of course, I would route the exhaust out the back of the boat above the water.

CHECK THE HOSE
We own a 1988 Doral Citation and have a problem with a water leak in the aft-cabin (starboard side, rear corner). A puddle accumulates every time we fill our fresh water tank. We were wondering if you've ever heard of this problem before from any other Citation owner. We would also appreciate any suggestions you could give us of how to fix this.

TO COOL OR NOT TO COOL
I am currently in the market for a 19-21-foot bowrider with a V-8 power train. I will running it on fresh water lakes in Alberta and on the Atlantic Ocean off Newfoundland, where my family resides.

My family tells me that a runabout used in salt water without freshwater- cooling will result in premature wear of the engine cooling components. I have contacted many manufactures about my concern and I can't get a straight answer. Many of them offer these systems as an option or as an aftermarket kit, but they won't say whether it's a must or not. Do I need fresh-water cooling or not?

A NICE CHANGE
I own a 31-foot, Formula-style boat with twin 454 engines and for many years, I conducted my own oil changes in the fall. My mechanic insists on leaving the old oil in the engines over the winter. He suggests I drive the boat for 10-15 hours in the spring, then do the oil change at that time. His explanation is that the oil goes bad over the winter. Is this right?

POWER OF CHOICE
I have a beautiful 1988 Bayliner 2455 with an original 5.0L OMC/Cobra (GM) engine. The engine is still running, but is starting to show some signs of aging. I would like to purchase a rebuilt engine at a decent price. Also, can I change the block for a 5.7L engine? I don't remember being able to run the engine over 4,000 rpm. Apparently, with all the stuff I have added, the boat is now too heavy. With six adults onboard, I can't bring the boat on plane.
