AN EXCITING SEASON AHEAD
I
am always amazed to see the latest offerings from marine manufacturers
throughout North America. And so far this year, there seems to be
no holding back as builders are launching some of the most innovative
technology we have seen in quite some time. While there are several
hot new cruisers and runabouts for 2003, engine manufacturers are
making big headlines in the two- and four-stroke outboard arenas.
During our
recent trip to the Miami International Boat Show, we learned that
the NMMA honoured not one, but two, entries with an Innovation Award
in the Engines and Propulsions category for outstanding new outboards
- one being Canadian-based Bombardier for its line of E-TEC Evinrude
engines. These are the company's first in-house-built and engineered
outboards since its acquisition of OMC in 2001 and, from what we
have seen, it was definitely worth the wait! The series ranges from
40 to 90 hp and will round-out with a line of hefty V-6s by the
2005 model year. Sharing centre stage was Suzuki Marine with its
world premiere DF250 hp V-6 four-stroke. The engine raises the performance
bar with impressive power-to-weight, exceptional fuel efficiency
and a compact design. Other new four-strokes from Suzuki include
a DF200 hp and DF225 hp. We're sure these products will surpass
the needs of recreational boaters. Look for tests on these products
in upcoming issues.
Canadian boat
shows across the country were a huge success as several major dealers
surpassed previous boat show sales. This is all great news and definitely
indicates a stable economy. On a lighter note, at the Toronto International
Boat Show, the fourth annual Boating for Children's Charity was
also popular selling over 1200 tickets - bringing the four-year
total to over $225,000! This, once again, proves boaters and industry
members do have big hearts for charity organizations.
If you're
still undecided on purchasing a new model for the coming season,
I am sure this issue of Power Boating Canada will help steer you
in the right direction. In the cruising department, we feature Maxum's
3700 SY and Fountain Power Boats' 38 Express Cruiser. This entry
can deliver a top end of 65 mph and will fill your need for speed.
And speaking of speed, PBC's Bill Jennings had the chance to inspect
Yamaha's 2003 two-stroke, the Z250 HPDI, during the Miami Boat Show.
Also be sure not to miss our special feature on "Aussie Rules,"
a recently launched mega-yacht owned by renowned professional golf
icon Greg Norman.
As we prepare
for the summer of 2003, Power Boating Canada continues to provide
readers with the latest news, exciting products and boating adventures
to increase the enjoyment of the boating lifestyle. (Top)
