FOUR WINNS 245 SUNDOWNER by Steve Fennell

The Four Winns 245 Sundowner is, in a word, impressive. Not only in size, but in features and comfort she offers. The spacious cuddy alone proves that designers went beyond the call-of-duty. The entry is large and the doorway is removable to let in plenty of fresh air and natural light.

Four Winns 245 SundownerTo save space, or even storage room, the backrests down here pull double duty as fill-in cushions to create the V-berth. While some berths can be as comfortable as a bed of rocks, the area will provide a good night's sleep. Four Winns even offers an optional enclosed head. Other items include two speakers, bullet-lights, a mirror and a vinyl headliner. Storage space is found under the V-berth cushions and on the shelves behind the backrests.

The cuddy is one of the main highlights of the 245, but there are no trade-offs in this model. The rest of the layout is just as inviting.

Entering the cockpit from the cabin, a pair of swivel buckets are located to port and at the helm. These chairs feature bolsters and the patented Spring Ride system for added comfort. On the side of the helm console there are moulded-in steps to provide easy access up past the walk-thru windshield and on to the foredeck - a handy and safe idea.

Drivers of this boat will love the helm. It's complete with burlwood trim and all the various instruments are surrounded with gold bezels. Highlights here include a compass, a depth sounder, a tilt wheel and a Sony AM/FM CD player.

Located directly behind the helm is a cockpit refreshment centre featuring several appointments that are not normally found on a model this size. It boasts a Corian countertop, trash receptacle, sink with pressurized water plus two drink holders, for a grand total of six throughout.

Directly beside the refreshment centre is the U-shaped lounge which flows all the way to the portside chair. It's large enough to accommodate family and friends and storage space underneath is designated for the standard bimini and 36-quart carry-on cooler.

Access to the swim platform, which boasts a concealed ladder, a shower and an optional remote for the stereo, is provided by the removable seat back which creates an aft walk-thru. Located either side are more storage compartments. There's an additional ski locker to stow more gear.

Hardware is stainless steel throughout. There are six cleats, bow and stern eyes, a bow light plus a thru-hull bolted bowrail. Another feature you'll appreciate is the anchor locker with an overboard drain.

This Four Winns Sundowner is as complete as most cuddy cabins can get. With a combination of power options from Volvo Penta or MerCruiser, which range from 280 hp to 375 hp, the 245 can provide the best of both worlds.
