THE DAWN OF A NEW YEAR
As we throttle up for 2002, this issue
marks the launch of our 17th year of bringing the excitement of
the boating lifestyle to Canadians from coast to coast. As the country
braces for another winter, there's a host of exciting shows coming
your way jam packed with new models that will heat up your boating
spirit and thaw the season's chill.
Many industry
leaders have told us the new year will present a few economical
challenges in the coming months and those waiting for the opportune
time to buy may just want to check out what 2002 has to offer.
The boating
industry is rapidly advancing both in technology and customer service,
and right now is perfect time to consider the boating lifestyle.
Manufacturers are offering incredible incentives while introducing
an impressive lineup of boats loaded with innovative technology.
Marina operators too, are more than ready to cater to your boating
needs with state-of-the-art facilities and comfortable services.
But as the
industry advances, it is not always pleasant. The marine industry
was saddened by the recent loss of Larry Lauzon, founder of Thundercraft
Boats. From a dream and a hope, Larry had built a $40 million company
that grew into one of the largest boat manufacturers in Canada and
greatly influenced the realm of recreational boating. His warmth
and generosity will be sorely missed, but his spirit will remain
with us forever.
Power Boating
Canada has always been on the forefront of recreational boating
and we are dedicated to scratching your nautical itch by delivering
the latest in product development, boating tips and exciting destination
stories. (Top)
In this issue,
Dusty Miller sits at the helm of the all-new Doral 310 SE as part
of an exclusive test starting on page 28. Veteran Power Boating
Canada contributor Harold Shield was on hand at the annual antique
boat show this past summer in the Muskokas inspecting streamlined
Greavettes and classic Curlews. Our western correspondent, Bill
Jennings goes on the test of a lifetime after an exclusive full
day tour of Canada's naval frigate, the HMCS Calgary.
We have also
introduced Eco-Logical Solutions, the first column of a six-part
series focusing on the OMOA's Clean Marine Program. The program's
incentive is to preserve our marine environment and encourage marina
operators as well as boaters to get involved and become more environmentally
friendly. After all, as boaters, we must take responsibility for
our waterways and this may be the last resort to preserve the marine
environment for our future generations.
With many events
already in the works for the new year, Power Boating Canada is gearing
up for another exciting year. But in the meantime, keep reading
and start planning for your 2002 boating season to help you get
through the cold winter months.
