ASK THE EXPERT

Steve Horsfall Diesel or Gas

by Steve Horsfall
I am considering buying a 36' to 40' aft cabin motor yacht or trawler and I am wondering if there is any data available that compares fuel consumption at different cruising speeds and rpm's between gas and diesel power ... I want to know if the fuel savings on diesel is worth the expense to upgrade to diesel power.

Question 2:
... I was discussing refitting a cruiser to a personalized floor plan and accessories as a project with a friend.

...
He offered to sell his boat. The boat is a 1967 Chris-Craft Roamer, in a 36' steel-hull configuration.

My questions are: By the time I complete the interior, and make this vessel seaworthy again, will it still be an economical undertaking?

Secondly, is it a worthwhile undertaking? ... Ultimately a swap-out for diesels would be preferable, as we would like to do some longer distance cruising.

Questions 3:
I'm seeking a greater top end spped at wide open throttle (WOT) without loss of current bottom or midrange performance. My boat is an 18.5' Sea Ray BR, 3200 lbs. ... At WOT the engine achieves 4800 rpm and a speed of 47 mph.

My dilemma is: which one of the Mercury SS Props is the best compromise? ...
